Dragster at Dixseption
Febraury 2005 - A Song in Words and Letters

Our First True Convention

This was our second convention, and the first where we actually appeared as Dragster, in our very first set, no less! Nerves were running high, and being placed first thing on the Sunday morning meant we had plenty of time to get nervous, though at least we didn't have to follow any superstar acts!

Before that, though, we opted to sing a couple of songs towards the end of the main concert on Saturday afternoon, as a taster for what would come the next morning. We performed two songs that were not due to be in the actual set - 'Dragster's Dixseption Battle Hymn' and 'Captain Beaver' - in our mind not the best offering we could have made, but we really wanted to save the good songs for the next morning. Still, they were received quite well and the audience we were greeted by the next morning was an indication that we probably hadn't put anyone off coming along!

Our set was written in the style of a series of questions, in the form of letters from curious fans - hence the name of the set being 'Songs in Words and Letters'. Each one served as a comedy link into the next song. Of course, to make sure we got good leads into our songs, the 'letters' were all made up by us, including the junk mail one! The idea of this sprang out of the desire to do something just a little different, and not just present musical entertainment to the crowd, but create a balance between song and comedy sketch. We were very pleased to see it so well received!

We were most gratified to see the number of people who came straight from breakfast to see us, and we did our best to put on an all round entertainment show. It was really a lot of fun and, to be really honest, we were thrilled at how it went. We were also very excited to have the support of Keris in "Captain BA" and "Dreams", and both Keris and Doran in "Gandalf the Red".

We got SAMS nominations for "1960's Future" and "Dreams", which was more than enough praise in itself, but the real surprise came in the evening when "Gandalf the Red" won the award for "Best at Con". We were truly and completely blown away. We had never expected anything like such recognition from our first set. Also, though I don't know for sure, I believe this may be the first (or one of a very small few) non-musical spoken piece to be awarded a SAM award. I'm open to being corrected on that one, though.

One thing was for sure, though, we couldn't let the music stop there.... Could we?
