Before We Were Dragster, There Was... This
|
The only thing that we had intended to sing at 16 Tones was a rapidly constructed semi-insta-band song called Filklite. The less said about that the better, I think! Apart from that, we really never intended to do any other singing at 16 Tones. It was our first filk convention, and we didn't really know what to expect. But then Stacy turned up with her guitar and says "I've got this tune...". She'd only been playing the guitar for just over a year, teaching herself, so I didn't know what to expect. But when we retreated to our room and he played those first few chords, it was pretty obvious we were on to something quite special.
The song was 'My Hamster's Out To Get Me', and it would appear again in our full blown hour-long set at the next convention, Dixseption. But for now, it was played as a performance in the main concert on the Saturday afternoon. It was very well received, although the main thing most people seem to remember was the moment we stalled halfway through, leading to some apparently memorable banter ('You can't stop there, we haven't finished the song yet!') that perhaps sold us just as much to the filk crowd as the song itself!
For a first performance, though, we were very happy with how it went, and it gave us the confidence boost we needed to decide, later that weekend, that we would have a shot at becoming a fully fledged filk band and aim to have a set at the next convention. On a train between Bromsgrove and Birmingham that Sunday night, Dragster was born.
